In the 1980s, the “Golden Girls” shocked America by showcasing vital, attractive, interesting, interested, funny, and sexually active women past retirement age. Whoa, what did we think about older women before? That at 66, women become invisible, irrelevant, and turn into stone? The interest in life doesn’t stop at a specific age. Our needs don’t disappear, neither our feelings nor our dreams.
I have faith in the future, so I’m going to say: TODAY, aging is inevitable. But I, for one, believe in DEFIANT AGING. (I will go down eventually like anyone else, but not without a fight.) Hence, the Not Invisible Woman.
My self-definition didn’t change with age: I don’t think of myself as old. I don’t want to be pitied, ridiculed, criticized, or discriminated against based on my age. I will not apologize for getting old. I’m creating ways to cope with age-related changes. I’m developing ways for aging better, feeling well, looking good, and being comfortable in my skin regardless of age. Are you with me? Then: START HERE!
